Social Media: How to Find Inspiration and Motivation

Written by Dr Hannah Farnsworth

This month we’ve looked at how to avoid the pitfalls of social media (SM). But this week let’s explore how you can create something truly motivating and inspiring with online platforms.

1 Follow Positive Influencers

Identify influencers and content creators who share uplifting messages, motivational stories and valuable insights. Look for people who have similar interests and values, and whose content inspires you to be your best self.

2 Create a Vision Board

Many platforms allow you to display content in a visually appealing way. Create a vision board of inspiring quotes, images and content that resonate with your goals and dreams. This can act as a daily reminder of what you’re working towards.

3 Join Positive Communities

Find and join online communities that share your interests and passions. Consider art, fitness, academic pursuits, pet care or beauty, and connect with others who will fuel your motivation.

4 Set Intentions on Your Feed

Be intentional about the content you consume. Unfollow accounts that bring negativity into your life, and replace them with content that sparks joy and enthusiasm. Your SM feed should be a source of positivity and encouragement.

5 Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

SM often portrays polished, perfect versions of people’s lives. Remember that we all face challenges and success is a journey. Celebrate the small steps you make towards progress and appreciate other people’s efforts and successes, too. Authenticity and real stories are more inspiring than success that appears effortless.

6 Engage in Challenges and Healthy Trends

Take part in positive challenges that inspire you, such as a fitness or reading challenge, or a creative project. When you complete it, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and may have forged new connections with like-minded people.

7 Aim for Creation of Consumption

Being a passive consumer of SM posts can lead to comparison and FOMO (fear of missing out). Try to shift towards being an active creator – share your own journey, insights and achievements. Your experiences may inspire others, and the act of creation can boost your confidence and motivation.

8 Explore Educational Content

From tutorials and life hacks to fascinating facts and DIY projects, SM is a great place to expand your knowledge and skills. You may feel inspired to upcycle an object, take up running, or learn to knit, making SM a clever tool for personal development.

9 Take Breaks When Needed

Recognise when SM feels overwhelming or is not supporting your wellbeing. Take a step back and focus on real-life experiences, nurture your mental health, and return to SM with a refreshed perspective.

SM is a treasure trove of motivation, inspiring you to engage with positive communities, work on your personal growth and celebrate your progress. You are in control of the content you consume, so spend time finding people who lift you up and encourage you to get the most out of life.
