Coping With Uncertainty in our lives

Written by Dr Hannah Farnsworth

Life doesn’t always feel steady. Emotional ups, downs, and the occasional curve ball can throw us off balance and lead to uncertainty that feels overwhelming.

Whether unsteadiness appears in the form of moving to a new town, changing school or job, shifts in family dynamics, or relationship difficulties, learning how to cope with uncertainty is a skill that will last a lifetime.

1 Acknowledge Your Feelings

Remember it is ok and normal to feel a mix of emotions when facing change. Take the time to recognise and accept how you feel – excitement, anxiety, fear, or all three. Recognising your emotions is the first step to managing them.

2 Focus on What You Can Control

While some aspects of change may be beyond your control, there will be some things you can influence. Identify the areas that you can control, and channel your energy into them. This might include deciding on some personal goals, setting up a routine that works for you, or finding ways to make new friends.

3 Maintain a Positive Mindset

Change can be a chance to grow and enjoy new experiences. Instead of seeing uncertainty as a threat, try to see it as a chance to learn, adapt and discover more about yourself. A positive mindset can help you approach challenges with resilience and openness.

4 Seek Support

When things are changing, you may need to lean on friends, family, teachers or other mentors. Share your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Remember, everyone faces uncertainty during their lifetime, and you are not alone with how you feel.

5 Embrace Flexibility

Life rarely goes exactly to plan, and unexpected change is normal. Try to embrace flexibility by being open to change and adapting to new circumstances. Learning to go with the flow can help to reduce stress and make your journey through uncertainty feel smoother.

6 Set Realistic Expectations

Adjusting to change takes time. Be patient with yourself and remember it’s ok not to have everything figured out immediately. Be realistic and allow yourself the grace to learn and grow through the process.

7 Focus on Self-Care

It is crucial to take care of your physical and emotional wellbeing during uncertain times. Try to get enough sleep, eat healthily, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Taking care of yourself will give you the strength to face challenges head-on.

Final Thoughts

Uncertainty is a natural part of life. While it may feel challenging, it also provides chance to grow and build resilience. By following the tips above, you can navigate uncertainty with strength and courage. No matter what comes your way, looking after yourself can help you adapt and thrive during life’s change
